Colectivo Felix, Buenos Aires, Argentina

Buenos Aires is, no doubt a wondrous city, and one that is a walkers heaven, with its countless streets decorated in the most picturesque graffiti, to its numerous restaurants serving the finest steak and Malbec. However, after days of eating meat and all sorts of offal, the desire for something a bit different gets stronger and stronger. Luckily for me, a fellow foodie had previously visited Buenos Aires and been to a supper club by the name of Colectivo Felix  and raved about it (here they’re known as ‘closed door restaurants’) especially as there was no meat served during the course of the meal. As much of a shock as it may seem to most people, it is quite possible to escape the lure of  juicy Argentinian beef and there’s no place better than Felix to experience Argentine cuisine without it. The darling of chef Diego Felix and Sanra Ritten, the food here is nothing short of spectacular, dining in the courtyard of their house with a bunch of people who share a love for all things culinary.

El Celler de Can Roca, Girona

So, in November I was told that there were no tables for Friday or Saturday dinner even in February, three and a half months later. In fact, there were no Saturday or Friday dinner reservations available for a YEAR! Well, it’s only the restaurant Can Roca, 2nd best restaurant in the world, 2011, 3 Michelin stars and one only needs to step into the wonderland of the premises to realise that there’s something really special about to take place over the course of the next 4 hours. Yet another family affair, The eldest Roca heads up the kitchen, the younger Roca looks after the wine and the youngest Roca takes care of the pastry. Quite a combination!

Alkimia, Barcelona

The science of turning ordinary metals into gold has been a long and fabled tradition,  the various permutations of which stretch through the furthest reaches of philosophy, folklore, medicine and desire. Whilst humankind may kept the art of turning metal into gold solely in its philosophical premise, the art of creating magic, transforming ordinary elements into something infinitely valuable has permeated into every aspect of life. Food has always been child of alchemy, the creating fine dishes out of the most basic and simple ingredients, nourishing, desirable, addictive to a cult status; indeed, cuisine upholds the very philosophies of alchemy and fascinates us every single day, urging us to seek out more and more alchemists and revel in their success. It is, then, no surprise that a restaurant be named Alkimia, paying homage to the fine science of creation and pleasure.

Mugaritz, San Sebastian

There are many places, both manmade and natural, that one journeys to, often wondering where the long and narrow road was led and if we’d ever get there, and then suddenly, you turn a corner and the only sound that rushes through your ears is the sound of your heart beating, the sound of wonder and awe escaping from your lips as you simply cannot believe the sight before you. The fact that we had arrived at one of the worlds best restaurants (#3 this year) was momentarily forgotten as we just gazed out at the hills, and the gem of a cottage with its dreamy  gardens that was to take centre stage for the next few hours.
