Odette’s

The first time I  heard of Bryn Williams was when I was working at The Orrery and, as is the case with most restaurants, one is made aware of all the notable alumni that have done time at the stoves. It wasn’t until many years later that when looking for a good neighbourhood restaurant in North London did Odette’s come back on the radar and this time, we were there without a second thought. Naturally, being in Primrose Hill bodes well in any situation, whether it’s a leisurely stroll up the hill to view all of London in its glory, or a lazy pint in the local pub, or even a cup of coffee in the many coffee shops on the street.

Trinity, London

When I told my cheffie friend M that we were going to go for dinner to Clapham, he did a double take and asked if I was sure I meant Clapham, being, as one could say, not the choice of destination for a gastronomic treat (no offence to Claphamites). Reason was that I’d heard, over the past year, many a good thing about Trinity, Adam Byatt’s neighborhood eatery, named after the church that guards the local vicinity. Clapham Common, by the way, is a haven for mass groups of people running, jumping, indulging in boot camp-style fitness regimes even in the pouring rain.

The Kitchin, Edinburgh

For most people August signals peace and quiet, a time when the streets are empty and the restaurants easy to book. Edinburgh, however, tells an entirely different story as a tornado of creativity and energy sweeps through its windy streets, and the world of drama, dance and music descend upon it. One scarcely has a chance to walk 5 paces before a flyer thrust under your nose or a half-naked man in high heels and fairy wings cracks a whip before launching into a monologue from A Midsummer Night’s Dream. With thousands of performances in hundreds of venues, it’s hard not to find yourself juggling shows and performances, slotting them into every minute of every hour. Of course, the other upside to being in Edinburgh, apart from whisky and haggis (skip the deep fried mars bar please!) is The Kitchin, where curly-haired Tom Kitchin of Great British Menu fame champions the wealth of Scottish produce.

L’Enclume, Cartmel

Ah, the Lake District, once the home of Beatrix Potter and her family of rabbits, ducks and other beloved immortals. Anyone who’s seen her biopic with Rene Zellweger and Ewan McGregor would no doubt have been smitten by the landscape of Cumbria. After 5 days of camping at WOMAD music festival, it was time for a bit of luxury and pampering and where better than to have a pit stop at what used to be one of England’s best kept secrets, L’Enclume in the small heritage village of Grange-over-Sands. Amongst culinary circles, Simon Rogan’s innovative and earthy cuisine is well known, especially with his London venture, Roganic, and more recently, his success on Great British Menu.
