The Table, Mumbai

It’s one thing when one person recommends a restaurant. It’s an entirely different matter when in the space of a day several people recommend the same restaurant. Having had some fabulous Indian food, a light and funky lunch seemed to be the deal of the day, and I’m always a sucker for fusion/cross-cultural food, so it wasn’t too hard landing up The Table, a light, airy and very comfortable restaurant, just minutes away from the Gateway of India and the Taj Mahal Palace hotel in Mumbai.

A menu well structured for the Indian market, there were the stalemates of pizza and pasta, along with various other bits that weren’t really to the best of our interests. Luckily, there were a few hidden gems across the menu that drew our instant attention. Being given carte blanche in ordering the food by the friend I was meeting I proceeded with sure-fire precision and accuracy…

Tapenade and croutes

Gougers

Little nibbles to start, ones that were as good as any, especially the textbook perfect Gougeres!.

Beetroot and goats cheese

Chicken wings

A timeless classic done beautifully with a touch of orange, the Salad of beetroot and goats cheese was perfect for the warm 30c winter sun outside!

The Chicken wings with soy, lime and spring onion were a surprise on all fronts – pressed and boneless chicken wings, diced into cubes and crisped up. Heavenly – a perfect dish in every way (we shared it, it would be a bit monotonous for one person to eat all on their own).

Lamb sausage

Steamed Mahi-Mahi

First up was Spiced Lamb Sausage, Crisp Onions and Poached Egg…The sausage meat had been crumbled, resembling mince, on top of mash and a generous helping of crisp onions made us both rub our hands in glee. The egg, naturally, going perfectly with the spicy sausage – a winner indeed.

Next up, Steamed Mahi Mahi in a Ginger, onion and soy broth was zingy and refreshing, perfectly cooked (with that bit of translucence in the centre).

Plum tart

The Plum and Almond tart with cinnamon ice cream too, was as it should be, and using whole wheat pastry made it even better!

When the friend was asked if he enjoyed the meal and what he thought of my selections, the reply was, simply, “oh, but what a noble profession you have.”
