I thought I’d seen it all in Goa, having been a patron for 30 years, the food, the Portuguese splendour, the idyllic beaches, the trippy hippy parties, the psychedelic trance raves, the breathtaking drives, oh, the list continues endlessly. I thought I knew Goa. So it seemed until my most recent birthday. I was told I was being taken somewhere special – to me this translated as one of the last isolated beaches known only to a handful of locals where food would be gloriously fresh, lip-smackingly lip smacking. Located on the Mandovi river, Solar dos Colacos is a 300 year old Portuguese mansion with its own private jetty and a collectors dream in antique furniture. It literally is like stepping into another world the moment one walks through the front door, a world of placidity and joy. The mansion itself is not a restaurant and it can only be booked for parties of 15 or more. The catering is done by a local caterer and is of exceptional quality, yet it isn’t the food that takes priority here…
